It is very hard to be in the thick of melee without being a warrior as either your primary or subclass. The general concensus about melee combat in GW seems to be that you have to play a warrior as either the primary or secondary (with some exceptions like the IW R/Me), because that is the only class that really gives skills to support the up close and personal skull bashing that is done in melee. Honestly, necromancers are very much a support class, with some exceptions (mostly builds that focus on high dmg through some of the death magic line). The majority of necro builds focus on giving advantages to their team in a somewhat passive manner (curses lowering the opposition's capability, blood sacrificing to give boons to your team and nuisances to the opposition, or by summoning up minions to increase numbers). My personal opinion is that if you really want to be in the middle of the battle doing alot of damage and fighting in melee, then you must at least be a secondary warrior.
EDIT: And there have been some people that are rather successful in both PvE and PvP as a N/W doing things like condition stacking and the such.
